STATEMENT

Throughout my career as a mathematician, I have always maintained an interest in art and the relationship of these two subjects. I have always admired the work of artist Alex Colville who uses compositions structured around complex geometrical and mathematical relationships to create extraordinary moods in depicting subjects in environments. I also admire as Seurat's work which used geometrical constructs and divisionism that adds atmosphere and electricity and Toulouse-Lautrec's work for keeping the drawing an integral element of the canvas.

While not following pointillism or impressionism explicitly, I like to "sculpt" the figures with the values and tones of the strokes to give volume to the forms while at the same time showing the hand of the artist in the work by reflecting the underlying drawing.

With this as a departure point, my interest is to develop and explore my own vision of "what life is like" supported by mathematical constructs and atmospheric color theory techniques supported by good drawing foundations.
